The Belgian flag
The Belgian national flag was created in the 19th century after Belgians rebelled against the Dutch in 1830. Here, the French flag was used as a symbol of resistance but later the Belgians wanted their own symbol of resistance, creating the first Belgian flag. It consists of three equal vertical stripes consisting of the colours black, yellow and red that is based on the old coat of arms of the Duchy of Brabant. The order of the colours was not always black, yellow and red. Since only the colours of the flag were fixed in the constitution, the flag changed fall design several times. Our flag is unique because the order of the colours specified in the constitution does not match the current flag design. In 1950, it was finally fixed as three vertical stripes in the order black-yellow-red starting from the hoist side. This considers the heraldic tradition of placing the darkest side closest to the flagpole.
