The Last Post

The Last Post is a very well-known tradition that has existed since 1928. Every evening at 8 pm precisely, the Last Post sounds under the imposing arches of the Menin Gate in Ypres. It is an ode and final salute to the fallen soldiers during the First World War. It is played by the buglers of the Last Post Association to honour the memory of the soldiers of the former British Empire and its allies killed under the Ypres arch during WWI. It is the Last Post Association's intention to maintain this daily act of tribute in perpetuity.

Every evening at exactly 8 o'clock, the police stop traffic under the Menin Gate in the Belgian city of Ypres so that the buglers can play their simple but moving tribute. For one minute, the crowd is silent and only the tones of The Last Post can be heard through a bugle. It is a tradition open to all and many people from abroad including mostly British come to Ypres to have this experience and honour their fallen soldiers.
