Pieter Breughel de Oude
Pieter Breughel de Oude was a painter who belonged to the Northern Renaissance. Among others, he produced the paintings "De Toren van Babel", "De Boerenbruiloft", "Kinderspelen" and "Nederlandse spreekwoorden". He became known for being the first painter to depict everyday life.
Peter Paul Rubens
Peter Paul Rubens was a Flemish Baroque painter, draughtsman, tapestry designer and diplomat, working in Antwerp. He was one of the most versatile and influential artists of his time. His smoothly painted, colourful paintings made him famous throughout Europe. Well-known paintings by him are "De Kruisoprichting", "De Kindermoord in Bethlehem", "Boerendans", "Slag der Amozen" and the portrait of Susanna Fourment.
James Ensor
James Ensor was a Belgian painter of symbolism. He is widely recognised as the leading innovator of modern art in Belgium, a deviant individualist who did not easily allow himself to be subsumed into one art movement or another. He was also a composer and writer. Well-known works of his are "De Intocht van Christus te Brussel", "De Intrige", "Masks confronting Deaths" and "De Oestereetster".
René Magritte
René Magritte was a Belgian surrealist painter. Among the paintings he made "La Trahison des images", "Le fils de l'homme", "Les Amants", "Golconde" and "Persoonlijke waarden". He was one of the best-known Belgian painters in general.
Hugo Claus
Hugo Claus was a Flemish poet, writer, painter and filmmaker. He was the most awarded author from the Dutch-speaking world. He belongs to the genres of poetry, theatre and novels. Surely, his best-known novel is "Het Verdriet van België". There are also the well-known works "Oostakkerse gedichten", "Suiker", and "De Verwondering".
Constant Permeke
Constant Permeke was a Belgian Expressionist painter and sculptor. He is considered the most important representative of Flemish expressionism. He is best known for his strong and solemn depictions of sailors and fishermen with their wives. Some well-known works include "Gouden Oogst", "De Grote Marine", "Moederschap" "Het Afscheid" en "Dagelijks Brood".
